There is a false idea that saving on food equals to eating unhealthy, but as crazy as it sounds, you can spend little to nothing and eat like a king every day. Let us show you how.

Create a grocery list.

When it comes to saving on food, grocery list is probably the most important step. Write down what you need before you leave and stick to it. Don’t let those advertisements get you to fill your bag with useless expensive items that you don’t even like.

Keep an eye out for sales.

Items on sale are your best friend here. It’s pretty self-explanatory, but remember that when something is on sale, it probably means it’s going to expire soon, so be cautious for that rotten meat or spoiled milk. You can’t save money when you have to buy medicine for food poisoning!

Don’t buy things just because they’re cheap.

Since we’re talking about sales, people who work at marketing are paid to get you to buy that useless bag of 10 disgusting fish oil flavoured candy, so get only what you need, and leave before your hunger overtakes your brain.

Never stick to brand names.

Sticking to a brand automatically forces you to buy one item, no matter the price. Unless it’s your favourite candy, avoid purchasing it, instead look for a cheaper, on sale item as mentioned above.

Cheap out where you can.

Some products are so basic, you can’t really make them unhealthy or tasteless. If you still care about the taste of your food, you can buy cheapest versions of some products, for example eggs, flour, rice, salt, etc. This way you will get the same quality for less, instead of paying for a popular brand.

Avoid pre-prepared foods.

Frozen pizza might sound like a good idea, but most of the time food like this is less nutritious and usually more expensive. If you really lack the time to make food buy inexpensive, but healthy foods that are easy to make.

Prepare leftovers for the next few days.

It’s amazing how many times you can eat a big bowl of spaghetti or how many meals you can make out of a single chicken. There are countless recipes for food like this, and if you’re lacking time to make it during the day, prepare meals in the evening and enjoy a few days without cooking while enjoying that sweet bowl of chili.

Always keep track of your budget.

An easy way to do this is to keep all the receipts you get and count it at the end of the month. This way you will be able to record your monthly saving and find new ways to go lower. You will find new recipes and ideas for your daily nutrition, but always remember – no matter how tight your budget is, never ever eat the yellow snow!

Saving on food is probably the best way to save money, although it is one of the hardest.
