They wear layers of clothes even inside the house. Although you won’t be living in sub-zero temperatures, it’s wise to lower your overall home temperature, if you have access to it. Instead of heating the house to your temperature of comfort, wear an extra hoodie or sweatpants inside.

Turn the heating off at night. Nothing beats feeling like a warm cocoon while sleeping at night. Some people do this just for the fun of it, but if you’re saving money, you should do this deliberately. Try to make good use of extra blankets laying around while you turn off heating at night. After you wake up, just turn it back on. Once you come back home from work, your house will be warm, but your heating expenses will drop.

Consider getting a heater. If your daily house usage focuses on one area, such as your home office room, you should think about buying a space heater. This way you can lower the temperature even more or even turn it off. Remember that space heaters are nowhere as close to standard heating sources, but they’re a good way to save some extra cash.

Never waste extra heat. It may sound funny, but some people heat up their home with ovens! This is a complete waste of energy, but everything has some good in it. After heating your food in the oven, leave it open so the heat can spread throughout your kitchen, giving you just a bit of extra warmth. This also works with showers – don’t close the door and let the heat spread. It doesn’t seem much, but everything adds up in the end.

Check for air flows. Any air flow in your home can greatly increase your money flow towards energy expenditures. This includes drafty windows, faulty doors, garage doors and any holes in your wall. Ok, there shouldn’t be any holes in your wall, but you should consider looking for any drafts around your house. If you never use your garage in the winter, you could seal the bottom of it with an old blanket or something similar – this way the cold air will have to try harder to get inside your house. A good way to check for any drafts is to simply run your hand around the perimeter of a window or a door. If you feel any air flow – you should seal it either with a blanket as described above or call for professionals if you’re willing to make a good investment.

Lower your room temperature.
