The history of Speedo is as curious as the name itself. Alexander McRae, a Scottish immigrant in Australia, founded a line of hosiery wears in 1920s. This line, initially called Speedo Hosiery was aimed at providing the users with comfortable and affordable inner wear. The company was headquartered in Sydney, Australia. However, it was the nearby proximity to the world famous Bondi Beach that changed the fortunes of McRae and Speedo.
Noticing the swimmers thronging the Bondi Beach day in and day out – irrespective of weather or time – inspired McRae to make a product that would be of use to these swimmers and can be sold directly at the beach, thus eliminating the need of retailing.
That’s how McRae came up with the iconic semi-synthetic swimming trunks for men and swimming costumes for women. These products, sold with just the name of the company Speedo Hosiery (and, Speedo Knitting Mills) soon came to be known as Speedos – a name that is still in use today.
Speedo and the Second World War
In the late 1930s, as the Second World War broke out, Australia soon got caught up in the wartime action and Speedo devoted much of its man power and technical resources to the Australian war efforts. However, the end of war meant good fortunes for most businesses as people desperately wanted to get back to their routine lives. This marked the arrival of a sensational fashion change (the one that’s still in vogue today) – bikinis. Speedo instantly captured this change through their line of bikini styled swimsuits for women.
Acquisition by Pentland Group
In 1990, Speedo was acquired 80% stakes in Speedo after the complete sale of their stakes in global sporting giant Reebok.
Over the year, Speedo has seen endorsement from a host of movie stars, models and professional swimmers. None, however, compares to the champion American swimmer Michael Phelps who won 8 gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics – a feat still unmatched.
Most Speedo products revolve around various varieties of swim suits and swim wear. However, other accessories like watches, eye wear, head wear and protective gear are manufactured and sold by Speedo, as well.
Recently, Speedo has launched new lines of regular inner wear for men and women. Using the latest Speedo promo code collection available at Chameleonjohn.com is the best way of saving on all Speedo products!
