Taco Bell restaurants first opened up as a hot dog stand known as Bell’s Drive-In and Glen Bell was just 23 years old when he started the business in 1946. Four years later, Glen opened up the Bell’s Hamburgers and Hot Dogs and across the street from him, there was a Mexican restaurant called Mitla Café. Glen observed the long lines there and saw that the point of attraction was the hard shell tacos. He mingled with the owners and they liked him enough to show him the preparation methods for the tacos and other food items.
With that, Glen opened up Taco-Tia and more branches called El Taco. In 1964, Glen Bell sold the first Taco Bell franchise to a former Los Angeles officer and when the brand went public in 1970, it did so with 325 Taco Bell restaurants under their belt already.
