Established by M.A. Thompson, Thompson Cigar first opened its doors in Key West, Florida in 1915. Following horrific hurricanes in Key West in 1920; the company moved to Ybor City, Tampa. Known as the 'Cigar Capital of the World', it was an ideal location for the company to be based.

In 1960 the company factory was sold to Robert Franzblau, who decided to move production to local Tampa factories.

In 1971 Thompson Cigars expanded its range, and began to sell briar pipes. In 1979 the first company catalogues were sent to customers. This replaced the letter and postcard mailings that had previously supported the company, and earned it the title of the world’s oldest mail order cigar company.
