Foundation
The roots of Village Inn can be found more than 50 years back in time. The first ever Village Inn Pancake Restaurant was founded by Peter Mola in 1958 in suburban Denver, Colorado. The name was soon changed to Village Inn Pancake House. The restaurant quickly became a favourite spot for locals and tourists in Denver to gather early in the mornings to have sumptuous portions of delicious breakfast items, primarily pancakes. Within 18 months of its foundation, Village Inn was incorporated in 1959 as Village Inn Pancake House Inc. This was to be the defining step in the future of Village Inn restaurants.
In 1961, owing to the popularity of Village Inn in Denver, two more local locations were opened. Later in the same year, Village Inn began franchising. The franchising efforts received overwhelming response from the restaurateurs across America and many of them applied expressly requesting their interest in owning a Village Inn franchise in their towns and cities.
Within next two decades, the growth of the franchise system was astonishing. Village Inn managed to open up over 200 franchises to great public and critical acclaim for their food. In 1982, Village Inn was merged into VICORP. The same year, VICORP offered its initial public offering.
The 1980s marked wild expansion of Village Inn through VICORP’s aggressive strategic acquisition plans that saw them take over Poppin’ Fresh Pies from Pillsbury, Continental Restaurants and Sambo’s Restaurant chain. This allowed Village Inn to own over 300 new locations and spread the brand name even further.
In another bid expand the horizons of operations, Village Inn Pancake House Inc. was renamed as Village Inn Inc. This allowed Village Inn to offer lunch and dinner menus and avoid being stereotyped as a breakfast only restaurant.
