History

The history of Von Maur takes us way back in time – to just after the civil war in America! Founded in 1872, Von Maur is one of the last remnants of the era when America started rebuilding itself from the bloody ruins of the civil war. Von Maur itself has many ties to that period – right from the way they operate to their interior design, and of course, the name itself.

JHC Peterson, a German immigrant to the United States, opened up a store of no special recognition in Davenport, Iowa. We all know that Iowa is the corn state and quite predictably, the store opened up by Peterson primarily dealt in the wholesaling of corn to the buyers from southern states.

The business soon started to flourish and Von Maur family joined the Petersons. In the early decades of 1910s, Von Maur family bought out the stakes of Petersons from the business and the whole chain of cord dealing shops were named to Von Maur. In the same decade, the focal point was shifted from corn to groceries and other grains as the profits in corn started to dwindle, thanks to the World War I.

The company kept growing exponentially to a period leading up to the Second World War, during which the company actually suffered the only five year of loss in their history. However, goodwill of the people and a general upbeat retail market – especially in the early years of 1950s saw the Von Maur family rebuild their business from strength to strength.

Today, Von Maur stands for traditions, family values, the grandeur of the bygone years and a great American story of success following hard work and honesty.
