William Hill started off in 1934 by a man of the same name and it was a time when gambling was still illegal in Britain. The company went through a lot of acquisition changes as it was once owned by Sears Holdings, then Grand Metropolitan and later on by Brent Walker in 1989. After some trouble with Brent Walker, William Hill caught the eye of Japanese investment bank known as Nomura who mounted a £700 million buyout in 1997. Two years later, Nomura offlanded the company to equity firms Cinven and CVC Capital Partners for £825 million. It wasn’t until 2002 that the company was listed on the London Stock Exchange. They also began making acquisitions throughout their time like the Sunderland Greyhound Stadium and the Newcastle Greyhound Stadium.
In the year 2005, William Hill had bought over 624 betting offices in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Isle of Man and Jersey from another company called Stanley Leisure, allowing them to be ahead of their competitor Ladbrokes for a while. In 2008, William Hill forged a partnership with Orbis and Playtech in order to boost their online operations. The company now runs worldwide and gives employment opportunities to over 16,601 people and they even ran their own TV channel for a while. It faces problems with gambling regulations in some parts of the world but nonetheless, William Hill has been able to keep its place in many other parts of the world.
