Blimpie’s first store opened up in 1964 by three high school friends; Tony Conza, Peter DeCarlo and Angelo Bandassare. The reception was so good that they sold their first franchising to a friend for $600 in their first year of operations. Bandassare left the operations in 1965 and the two remaining buddies continued expansion into New York City. Just three years after opening, Blimpie had 10 stores and 4 of it were owned by the owners.
They found it hard to make profits despite the rise in chain growth and sales volume, thus Conza and DeCarlo focused only on franchising. A dispute between the two saw Blimpie separating to become two entities. Fastforwarding to 1983, International Blimpie owned by Conza had $1 million in revenues and franchising stores numbering up to 150. The years continued to be turbulent for the two but the Blimpie chain has outlived all that.
