Fab is a popular design store with a great online and brick and mortar presence in over 5 countries.
Fab was founded in 2010 as a designer clothing store for men and women. Jason Goldberg, an experienced internet businessman and marketer, was the founder of Fab.com. The company, however, had to face stiff competition from other e-commerce stores dealing in fashion and apparels. That was when, in 2011, Goldberg decided to rebrand the website as a design website, stocking and selling not only clothes but every kind of designed product including arts, crafts, jewelry, custom accessories and so on.
The impact was instant and right there to see for everyone. Within first six months of rebranding, Fab received more than 150,000 new registrations and close to one million new orders. However, this turned out to be a minor event as in the following one and a half year period Fab grew at astronomical rates, increasing the number of registrations to more than ten million people and total number of orders in excess of five million.
The rise of the company was so astonishing that many investment firms and bigger outlets like Amazon saw Fab as a potential buyout. At one point, some analysts even made claims that Fab was worth well over $1 billion. This, however, turned out to be unfounded and in end Fab was bought out by an international equity fund named PCH in 2015 for unrevealed amount.
The foundation and corporate growth of Fab took place in Manhattan, New York where the corporate headquarters are still located. The shipping and warehouse facility has been moved around the East Coast for some years and currently is located at Keasbey, New Jersey.
Fab and the idea of social shopping
Fab was the first ever retail and e-commerce store to promote social shopping. The concept of social shopping, new in 2011, basically involved social media integration of shopping experiences, allowing shoppers to see what others are shopping for and share what they are shopping for, themselves. This promoted live review system which is an integral part of all Fab stores even today.
