The food retailer came into business in 1957 and focused on selling fully cooked entrées, side items and desserts as well. Founded by John Harry Hoenselaar, his involvement with meat started when he was 18 and he became a salesman for The Honey Baked Ham Company. He had a knack for meat slicing and in 1936, he created a prototype of what would be the first spiral-slicing machine using tire jack, a pie tin, a knife and a washing machine motor.
By 1944, he was already filing a patent for this invention and went around looking for buyers for his machine but to no avail. Come 1957, the widow of William Hubenet, former owner of The Honey Baked Ham Company had contacted John with prospects of selling the company at $500. With that, he re-mortgaged his house and opened his first store in 1957. The rest was history and today, anyone interested can be a part of the HoneyBaked Ham legacy and set up a franchise in the desired location!
