Sirius XM was founded by a team of three; Martine Rothblatt, Robert Briskman and David Margolese in 1990. Rothblatt founded Satellite CD Radio and the company pioneered in approaching the FCC to ask for unused frequencies so they can turn them into satellite radio broadcast. Briskman was a former NASA engineer and he designed the company’s satellite technology. In 1992, Margolese (who had founded Rogers Wireless) provided financial help for the venture and became CEO after Briskman. The next five years saw him lobbying the FCC for allowance of satellite radio to be deployed and also raising up to $1.6 billion which was used to build and send three satellites into orbit.
The company then changed their name to Sirius Satellite Radio and their merger with XM Satellite Radio gave birth to Sirius XM as we know it today! XM Satellite Radio’s origins date back to 1988 and in 2000 XM had raised $1.26 billion and also secured deals with Honda, General Motors and Toyota. XM’s first broadcast was scheduled for the 12th of September 2001 but in light of the September 11 attack, it had been postponed to the 25th of September instead. The merger between these two power houses took place in 2007 and it was worth a whopping $13 billion. Today, Sirius XM still continues to provide its listeners with unique radio shows and a variety of channels that serve a number of different genres.
