The first TGI Fridays restaurant had opened up in 1965 in New York City by Alan Stillman. The area he lived in was a posh one with many young and single people, thus TGI Fridays was able to gain popularity and that’s visible through their revenue of $1 million collected in the first year. The second location where TGI Fridays opened up was at Memphis, Tennessee and then followed by Dallas in the spring of 1972. The restaurant became so popular that they had to install ropes for people to wait in line to be seated, which was a strange concept during the ‘70s.
TGI Fridays then opened up in the Houston Galleria in 1973 and the grand opening was attended by seven astronauts lead by Alan Shepard. The introduction of the popular Loaded Potato Skins took place in 1974, and by 1975 the chain grew to be 12 restaurants in 9 different states. In 1982, travel writer Judy Williamson had reported TGI Fridays as the grand-daddy of the singles bar as places come and go but Fridays had endured on.
